Dycks Arboretum of the Plains began October 11, 1981 and has matured into one of the largest native plant gardens in the region featuring more than 1,000 varieties of native and adaptable trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses. The site chosen for the arboretum was adjacent to Schowalter Villa retirement community and one block south of Hesston College.

Hesston College is a Christ-centered community where each student is educated and nurtured academically, socially and spiritually. HISTORY

Abe & Amos Hess, along with Adam H.D. Smith of Albany, New York bought land in Emma Township, land that the new Missouri Pacific Rail Road went through.  They bought 320 acres and connected with land promoters to form a town company called “New Albany Township Company. The town of Hesston was officially organized on July 16, 1886, in Emma Township on the north side of Harvey County,” read the first Edition of The Hesston Gazette.
